Back in the 1930s, notes the U.S. Wall Ball Association, beach-goers hitting a worn tennis ball against the sides of wooden jetties inspired the New York Parks Department to create community handball courts in city parks. These days, the game is a professional sport called Wall Ball, played competitively at athletic centers across the country. Dmitry Druzhinsky, co-founder of Brooklyn’s MatchPoint NYC, a premier health and fitness complex, recently was joined by politicians for the Pro Wall Ball Tournament. The annual pro competition – billed as the “Battle of the Boroughs,” serves to raise awareness for public health and youth empowerment. The winners were awarded a trophy and earned a full year of bragging rights.
